How to plan a website build

This step-by-step guide walks you through what happens from our first chat to the day your site goes live. No jargon, no mystery—just a clear picture of the process so you know what to expect at every stage.

Step - contact

Step 1 – Contact, the big picture chat

This is where we get to “meet” each other and where we can see how we may help you. You tell us about your business, club or hobby, your goals, and what you hope your website will do for you. We will ask questions, throw out ideas, and flag any obvious opportunities or challenges. 07788 931511paulshotan@hotmail.com

What we’re figuring out here:

  • Why you want a new website (or redesign)
  • Who it’s for
  • What success looks like for you

No decisions yet – this is all about understanding.

step 2 planning

Step 2 – Work out a plan of action

Next, we turn big ideas into something practical. Together, we decide what the website needs to do now, and what can wait for later.

This usually includes:

  • What are the Key goals (e.g. get enquiries, sell products, explain a service)
  • Pages needed (home, about, services, contact, etc.)
  • Features (forms, booking systems, blog, shop, integrations)

This step keeps the project focused and avoids scope creep later on.

Web design proposal

Step 3 – Budget, Timeline & Proposal

Once the website scope is clear, we put together a proposal. This outlines what’s included, how long it’ll take, and how much it’ll cost.

You will be clear about:

  • Project stages
  • Milestones and deadlines
  • Payment structure

Once you’re happy and give the green light, we’re officially under way.

Step 4 website content

Step 4 – Content – What will the site say?

We need to know what content is going on the site. That means your text, images, videos, downloads – etc.

We will decide:

  • Who’s writing the copy? This will always be lead by you, the expert but we are here to help you along the way.
  • What images are needed. Your may not have images yet so we can use Stock photos temporarily
  • Any existing content we can reuse or improve.

Good content makes design and development smoother and faster, so this step really matters.

step 5 website structure

Step 5 – Site structure

Now we plan how people will move through your site. This is about making things easy and intuitive; we’ve all seen websites that are confusing or plain annoying! It’s vital not to fall into that category!

This may include:

  • A sitemap (this shows the list of pages and their structure)
  • Mock-ups (your basic page layouts)
  • Navigation planning – how will visitors find what they want on your site, quickly and easily?

Think of this as the blueprint before we decorate the house.

website styling

Step 6 – How will your site look?

This is where things get exciting. Together, we design how the site will look and feel, based on your brand and preferences.

You will review:

  • Colours, fonts, and overall style. Find examples of website that you like, let us have the links to those sites and we can then get a clear idea of your taste.
  • Key page design to set the overall site style and layout (usually starting with the homepage)

You give feedback, we refine, and once approved, we move on to building.

Building a website

Step 7 – Building your site

With the design confirmed, we bring everything to life. This is the technical part, but you don’t need to worry about the details.

Behind the scenes, we will be:

  • Building your pages using WordPress, the #1 website platform worldwide and the Avada Theme.
  • Adding your content
  • Setting up features and integrations
  • Making sure it works on all devices and browsers (Responsive Design).

You’ll be able to see progress at any time online.

Step 8 – Testing and then – launch…

Before launch, we test everything. Links, forms, speed, mobile layouts – the lot.

This is when:

  • Any bugs are fixed
  • Small adjustments are made
  • Final content is checked

You’ll have a chance to review and sign off before launch.

  • Training (so you can update the site yourself)
  • Ongoing support or maintenance
  • Future improvements and new features
  • ]We can help you to review what’s next so your site keeps growing with your business.
